KIFF was an incredible fest!

...again, I just want to say thank you to the wonderful people behind the Kansas International Film Festival! It was such a great experience. The people were kind, the BBQ was good (nothin' compared to Smitty's in Lockhart, TX though), and the festival was a blast.
I'll attach some photos below - The screenings took place at the retro/renovated Glenwood Theatre in Overland Park, KS. Arianne, Ryan, and I stayed at the oldest retro lodge in KC, the White Haven Motor Lodge...a pretty perfect fit coupled with the screening venue. During the fest we saw some great films like 16 to Life, How I Got Lost, & Zombie Girl...and got chat with the filmmakers. And don't think we didn't take the time to enjoy and try the local flavor...gotta say that Boulevard's Pale Ale was quite tasty...although, when paired with the heavy/saucy Arthur Bryant's BBQ, it goes without saying that we all felt a little bloated. ...so, pics are below - and thanks again KIFF & crew...we loved it!

"Director Justin D. Hilliard is an interesting voice amongst the shouts of the independent film community. I was sent his feature "Wednesday" last year and was really blown away with, an epic tale from a limited budget that took place on two continents. It was really an impressive experience. Hilliard contacted me not too long ago about his most recent feature, The Other Side of Paradise. I'm here to tell you that not only does it reach the standards held by the previous Striped-Socks production - but triumphantly rises above it. Everything that made Wednesday a memorable and fun experience is completely and utterly amplified times ten in this much more natural feeling road-trip drama comedy. A true adventure on film if ever there was one, I can't begin to describe how much fun this film is when it's "on". It's a romantic and entertaining ride through the south, mostly Texas and delivers a touching and beautiful rollercoaster of emotions. Although a sizable two hours in length, Hilliard's opus is such an interesting and emotionally impactful piece that it makes it all certainly seem worthwhile. Although surely not everyone will agree with me, those who do will find an amazing and engaging experience."

"When I first saw The Other Side of Paradise I truly enjoyed it. But I had a hunch that this film was even better than my initial reaction. Sort of like a great album. One that on first listen you like but find that the more you listen and the more you catch the rhythm and the movement it becomes one of your most soul stirring records. After seeing this film again my theory was confirmed. I adore it. Sort of like life and the main character, Rose; it is far from a perfect film but that does not make it less beautiful."

Things are really coming together...
A lot of late nights prepping for the world premiere at the 2009 AFI DALLAS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL on March 29th at 9:15pm. Both shows sold out pretty fast...can't wait to see this thing on the big screen with an audience!

I know it has been quite some time since I've updated the blog...the reason being...
POST-PRODUCTION is going so incredibly well...busy, busy, busy...This is such a fun fun fun film...
The performances, pacing, cinematography, and effects have really come together brilliantly...now time for post sound & music...

FIRST DAY OF SHOOTING!!!

PRODUCTION HAS BEGUN!!!!!!!!!
So....the first two days of shooting went so incredibly well!!!
...and people said that starting production on Friday the 13th was a bad omen...

On Friday, we shot at DFW Airport - Terminal A. From script to screen, it was exactly what Ryan Hartsell (DP/Co-Producer) & myself envisioned. Ron Gonzalez (camera operator/gaffer) was a godsend for this project and is equipped with the gear and know-how to bring our vision to screen.

So we start shooting this Friday the 13th...no omens in that date at all :)
Can't wait...it's been non-stop...locations, costumes, make-up, sound...prep is really coming together...We've got such a great passionate cast & crew that I can't wait to work with...

Meet -"Inky the Ghost" and other updates...

Well, we got back 'INKY the GHOST' our 1986 LTD Crown Victoria Station Wagon (with a balls to the wall 5.0-liter V-8, ahhhhhhh!)...
It's wonderful!
We are currently adding some production design elements to it, but it is absolutely perfect for this film.
The official 'The Other Side of Paradise' website will launch any day now, and it is going to be state of the art incredible. Jason Hartsell (with Ryan) are doing a fantastic job on it!
Things are really coming together...so thrilled and ready to shoot this film.

Casting just about complete...

Okay, so we've finally made some very difficult decisions regarding casting and we are absolutely thrilled by the choices we've made. Every role is now cast, except for a couple that still have 'Name' actors still in consideration.
Ryan and I are going to purchase Rose' car, a 1986 V8 Crown Victoria Station Wagon tomorrow. We got an incredible deal on this perfect vehicle...WHAT A FIND!!!
Hopefully, I'll start meeting with a lot of the cast, starting next week...to being the rehearsals and such...I can't wait...the talent we have on board this project is just so thrilling.

The Other Side of Pre-Production - Callbacks

We've already had the initial set up auditions a couple of weeks ago. The three lead roles of Rose (Arianne Martin), Alex (John Elliott), and Jamie (Frank Mosley) were all cast without any auditions.
Today, we had callbacks for a few of the roles that have been a little more difficult to make a decision about. Honestly, every single actor and option could work perfectly...just each in a different way...
It's all been very exciting...The talent that has auditioned for 'The Other Side of Paradise' has been astounding...I wish I had more roles to offer these brilliant actors. I also don't remember the last time that auditions made me laugh out loud so often...It was a blast today.
